We buy the coverage from the rental company. We had a friend whose rental car was damaged by a hotel valet employee. It became a huge mess between the hotel, rental car agency, our friend and his personal auto insurance that took months to come to a conclusion. Since then, we bite the bullet and pay the extra.
10. Re: Car rental through Costco by non-member. 10 years ago. Costco changed their procedure a couple years ago to require the Costco member number in order to make a reservation. Prior to that, pretty much anyone could book using their codes and the rental companies rarely asked to see the Costco membership card.
