The hotel sites that offer AAA discounts have a place where you select AAA rate which is about 15% when booking online or will give the discount when showing up on the day.

I book my own travel and only have gotten AAA discounts in the USA at large chain hotels. When I go to Europe I use smaller local hotels or B&Bs to get more of the local flavor.
While we were there we rented a car from AAA Car Rental. We had the BEST experience!!! There was a miscommunication regarding the timing of the rental. The owner personally brought over the car to our hotel. He upgraded the car and then gave us the entire rental for free. I have never had a more professional and satisfactory experience with any ...

As far as towing, we do carry our AAA cards, but, you do have to think a bit before you take your rental car on the lonely unimproved 4 wheel drive areas.
On top of it you get. AAA rate for hotels which is about a 10% discount on hotels. You also get AAA service from travel agents. On top if that you can get car service calls for things like flat tires and dead batteries. A call for something like this can be the cost of the plan.
As Nick has stated, read the terms for the credit card you plan to use. Most cards insist you decline all other insurances but in Italy the price of the rental includes some insurance so you can't decline it, which is why most cards don't cover Italian rentals. Again, read the terms and conditions of the credit card to be certain.
