There are also very good and free map apps like maps.me which allow you to download maps. These should provide you with detailed road maps. Both will work off-line (ie. No cell or wifi access) and will use your phone gps to find your location. However, if you need detailed trail maps or elevations etc, you will need to buy a proper paper map.

Welcome. FYI, this is the more general New York State forum. You'll get more responses if you post on the New York City forum. Be that as it may, I prefer Google. Mapquest used to be notorious for incorrect and bass-ackwards routes.
It's not so much for driving directions (I'll have GPS) as it is for me to be able to get a sense of the whole route and how much time it will take to get from A to B to C to D to etc. Google Maps caps your number of destinations at 25. Routexl.com will let you add 250 stops (!!!) but you have to pay money to get access to more than . . . 25.

We were able to find our friend Janet's house in San Nic without having to stop and ask strangers, which we have never been able to do in 20 years ;)
