   If you think that you will be riding the subways and ot busses at least 12 times then it is worth it, at least that is when you will break even. It's not all that hard to do but as whiz said many things are within walking distance. Also as said, there are many times when a quick cab ride will be about the same as 4 people heading into the subway.
