They often limit the so called "unlimited miles" to only a handful of states, with a 25 - 35 cent/mile surcharge for any miles outside of those states.

Read the fine print. "Unlimited" on most agreements say within the state you rented and contiguous states only (those states connected to it). If the rental company finds out you went further or checks the cars GPS, you will be charged so many cents per mile that you went out of that area, which will add up very quickly.
