I recently have been looking for a rental with unlimited miles myself. Some car rentals like avis and budget advertise unlimited miles, but read the fine print. They often limit the so called "unlimited miles" to only a handful of states, with a 25 - 35 cent/mile surcharge for any miles outside of those states.
Budget says "Unlimited Mileage. When your car rental contract includes unlimited mileage, you can drive anywhere, as far as you like, without incurring mileage surcharges." r6lps can you point to a specific example where the Unlimited includes the restriction that you describe?
I have two vans reserved with unlimited mileage. One is through a.vis and the other is Alamo. Other agencies put a cap on the miles since we are doing a six week rental. BUdget will allow us 4200 miles. I have checked the fine print and Avis and Alamo seem to be the ones around here at least.
We've always rented from Hertz (have a gold card and AAA) and have always for many years had unlimited mileage. Most national car rental places allow unlimited miles, each franchise could put restrictions on it. the companies to look at are: Hertz, Avis, National , enterprise, Alamo, Dollar, thrifty,and budget. You need to talk to the individual places you are renting from to find out for sure.
A trick I've used at Phx (very high rental car taxes) is to rent off the airport. There is a Budget/Avis a few miles away on Indian School. I think it cost me under $20 in cab fare and I saved over $200 in taxes for a 10 day trip. Selection may be limited. I also look to return the car to the airport, instead of offsite.
