4. Re: Using AAA to book rental car through Hertz. You need liability insurance and insurance on the vehicle itself. You'll purchase liability through your car rental company (that's required), but this AAA insurance may cover the vehicle. The only way to know for sure is to contact Hertz directly though.
Thanks. It appears there's no AAA discount on Hertz right now except for weekend and weekly rentals (I'm renting for 4 weekdays). Hertz has a 25% off discount coupon code, but it only allows one CDP code, so it won't let me enter my AAA information to get the free second driver.
Hertz told me it was based on what the rental said at the time of booking. My booking clearly stated unlimited miles, but I played around and did another “fake”booking with the same dates like a month later and the terms were changed to 1500 miles included. To be safe, I would stick with Alamo. Hope this helps with your planning!
Two days later, I picked up a Hertz rental with unlimited mileage and drove it in three states - and Hertz did not care at all. That's why I don't consider them in the same category. Enterprise/Zipcar started by focusing on local, short-term rentals and Hertz/Avis (their parent companies) had a different business model.
The remaining optons are Hertz, Avis, and Budget. All have a mileage limit of 1050 / week for anything larger than a fullsize car. I am aftraid that won't be enough so I guess I have to stick to the fullsize with unlimited mileage. If you happen to know a valid code that gives unlimited mileage or other websites to try - let me know.
