   Avis has a prepay option that is about 25-30% lower than the Pay at the Counter, BUT this is not. applicable to AMEX AVIS certificate holders. Also, if you follow the instructions and go thru AMEXMR, the published rates are 10-15% higher than those obtained thru the AVIS website. Thus on a $1,000 rental thru AVIS.

   -Hawaiian airlines discount with Avis: K816401 (This one tends to be the cheapest)-Island air discount with Budget: U030087-Other rental car options include Discount hawaii car rental, Adventures rent-a-jeep (used cheap 4x4s), Costco, Priceline and Expedia. I'm sure there are lots more options, but found these to be the best.

   Answer 1 of 9: A few years ago, someone posted a discount code for Budget and we were able to save quite a lot of money. Wondering if anyone has a current one they are willing to share.

   It is only $5 difference between Avis and Budget with a 30% off Budget code I am using. I checked Alamo as well but they were $40 more than Budget after taxes for the dates we are renting (May 17-20). If anyone else is interested, the Budget code is U072411 and it's valid until the end of May.

   Always book direct. Especially with cars in such short supply. If you show up at the Hertz counter with a Hertz reservation you will get better help if there is a problem, than if you book through a third party and have to track down Expedia in a hurry. 2.

   I usually book with Ortbitz - the best rate I can find and then the day before or day of my trip - I low ball priceline and get a deal. Last time -- Jan 15-22nd one of the in-terminal car rental agencies booked a mid-size for me (thru Orbitz) and I arrived and they were going to put me in a compact, charge $10/day for my husband and $15/day to upgrade to a full sized.
