4. Re: Cheapest supermarket chains. 11 years ago. IMHO, VONS (a Safeway company) and Ralphs are the most expensive in SoCal for Main Stream. Albertsons can be a bit less. Gelson's and Whole Foods are the most expensive, IMHO. If you want a Healthy Grocery Store, check out Sprouts Farmers Market in Southern California.
Pavilions. Pavilions is a grocery store banner used by Vons, a supermarket division of Albertsons in Southern California. Although similar to Vons stores, Pavilions markets are more upscale and feature a larger selection of organic food, wine, and other specialty foods. So Ralphs (a Kroger company), VONS (a Safeway Company), Albertsons (A SuperValu company) and Stater Bros. (a local Southern California chain) are the main Supermarkets with lots of variety and choice. Sprouts Farmers Market is the main "healthy" Grocery Store in San Diego, similar to Whole Foods.

To me, Vons prices seem high on fresh produce, which I buy a lot of. I do like the "Five Dollar Fridays" at Vons, where some items (often meats or cheeses, but sometimes things like whole pizzas ...
