I tried several times to contact the host via email, via phone and through the Airbnb help desk - the host never responded. Finally Airbnb's attitude is to support their host and leave the client out on a limb. "wait 24 hrs" was the best they could do - oh or cancel and get 50% back.

Thanx.1 airbnb is near the cable car at nob hill, post st.the other is sutter st. Cost about 600-700 singapore dollars & they are flats, compared with hotel rooms. I am not sure if castro area or the post/sutter st areas flats are better in terms of safety & public transport to fisherman wharf or tourist areas.

It's not just AirBnB that's illegal in NYC (and an ever growing number of other cities in the US), it's short term rentals. VRBO is as illegal as AirBnB in those places. It's not illegal but owners are to pay Transit Occupancy Tax to the city and be registered with the city.

Well it has 48 reviews, so not likely new. It sure does not look new. The airBnB map puts it around the Plaza Hermandad, where the taxis wait, but airBnB can be bad at locating things.
