For security you just scan yours and hand over your ID, then say "and this one is for [my son, my husband, my daughter, etc.], and scan that one while they (or you) hand over their ID. Same thing at the boarding gate, just without the ID part.

10 years ago. I am pretty sure you should be able to check-in online provided you go to the operating carrier's website with the right PNR. Seat reservation though is subject to the airline's policy. In BA's case, unless you have status with BA or Oneworld, if you don't pay, you don't get to reserve a seat.
