Sorry but any liability insurance carried by the car rental company DOES NOT cover the renter. If renter elects not to purchase the optional Liability coverage from the car rental company the renter is personally liable for any claims made by a third party as a result of an accident the renter cause while driving a rental car.
The potential issue of immediate payment for damages is why I use a credit card with primary rental car coverage. I declined it because this insurance is provided through my credit card, if I rent the car on that card. I see that some still advise paying for it even if you have credit card based coverage, because it can take time and effort to get these costs repaid (presumably you have to pay it yourself up front) in an international situation.

6 years ago. Hello! Our auto insurance does not over us outside of the US. I do get auto insurance through my credit card company but it only covers our rental car. We have medical insurance that will cover us 100% in Grand Cayman. My concern is if we get into an accident that's our fault and not having coverage on the other vehicle/driver.
