I've been looking for a car rental place in IAD (Washington Dulles) in July. kAlmost every single site has min-priced cars @ about $33 a day, but for some reason, Kayak.com has some cars at $15 a day.

It shows prices on various web sites side by side but you actually rent the car through which ever other web site you choose. I use it to see possible prices and then book through one of the car web sites that seem reasonable.

Use Kayak or expedia for air and/or rooms but not cars because they often include NO insurance costs as mentioned . Your link opens up to America car rental which does disclose insurance info and is a good choice . During the reservation I was told the reservation fee will be deducted from the total sum upon returning the car. However, i was not refunded, instead vipcars gave me an excuse that it was a booking fee. EURO 74 for 10 days car rental in NZ is very costly. They should have clearly indicated that its non refundable.

And last year, kayak sourced the cheapest car rental via autoeurope for the Big Island of Hawaii. It was cheaper than Costco or Discount Hawaii Car Rentals. I conisder Kayak a travel research tool. If I can book direct with airline, hotel etc, i will. But if only option is to book via Kayak, i would not heistate based upon my experience. YMMV.
Kayak is merely a search engine that compares prices from different sites. Kayak then sends customers to various sites to complete the actual booking. The site might be the car rental company or it might be any third party booking site. I think it might not be clear to all users of Kayak that they are actually being sent to another site.
