I've used them to find reasonably-priced hotel rooms in smaller cities, and they also have a broad range of hotels in larger cities. Rakuten Travel is a division of a huge Japanese online retailer. I do think that their star rating system is a bit inflated.

    My choices are Jalan (Japanese), Rakuten (Japanese), Booking.com, Toyoko Inn (identical Japanese or English, though English requires credit card information).
