    It is called "sales tax" here, and is somewhere around 8% or 8.5% in Chicago. There are no refunds of any kind to visitors. Generally all merchandise is taxed at this rate.     The only tax 'break' in Illinois is on food bought in retail store, which is 2%. The range on taxes in the Chicago area is 6.75% in suburban counties (My example is Deer Park in Lake Co is the lowest because it only has state and county tax, no city taxes), to 9% in the City of Chicago (and it is 11% for alcohol and soft drinks).
