With any of the Major Car Rental Companies, the best thing to do is sign up for the Frequent Renter Program, such as Hertz #1 Gold.Basically you do all the "paperwork" in advance at home, and in most locations, bypass the counter and go straight to your vehicle (Electronic Boards show which space it is located at), and then just show your drivers license to the Security Staff at the exit.
Re: Hertz, Avis or Alamo at SFO. 1 year ago. Yes, it is free to join any of the car rental companies "elite" memberships. Never rented at SFO so can't tell you what the car choices are like. When renting I go with whoever is cheapest and lately we've been getting cars from Avis.

I've historically had fairly good experiences with Hertz in SFO (though if you're not a gold member expect long lines at the counter), though this last rental experience has to be one of the worst I've ever had. After returning the car, you can take the Automated People Mover (called AirTrain) from the Rental Car Center to the terminals. Free of charge.
