7 years ago. As I frequently travel with my small son, I often have multilpe boarding passes on my phone. For security you just scan yours and hand over your ID, then say "and this one is for [my son, my husband, my daughter, etc.], and scan that one while they (or you) hand over their ID. Same thing at the boarding gate, just without the ID part.
In 99% of cases you can check in online and then get your boarding pass at the airport. In the other 1%, which is probably Ryanair, you need to find an Internet cafe and check in and print your pass there unless you are away for a short enough time you can print both your outbound and your return pass at home before you leave. Some places will require you to show documents before a boarding pass os issued, so even thou you have checked in online doesnt always mean you will also get your boarding pass. You need to make sure you have the person's name exactly as it appears on their government issue ID (whether a driver's license or a passport). That's very important these days.

We both have new passports and our old ones, expiring 02/2018 and 06/2018, are on record at AA. I checked in online with the old numbers and got the first leg boarding passes printed off. We plan to get with the AA agent at TUL this afternoon. The new passport numbers were not accepted by AA for online Check in.
