"Kids eat free" is a more suburban, not a NYC phenomena. I agree with NYWhiz (as usual) that street food is a great idea. Pizza is also an inexpensive staple in NYC (but avoid tourist trap pizza, such as Ray's on 7 Ave & 53rd St where I was recently charged $7 for a bad slice.
