4. Re: Cheapest supermarket chains. 11 years ago. IMHO, VONS (a Safeway company) and Ralphs are the most expensive in SoCal for Main Stream. Albertsons can be a bit less. Gelson's and Whole Foods are the most expensive, IMHO. If you want a Healthy Grocery Store, check out Sprouts Farmers Market in Southern California.

Von's markets are very common in southern California, but note that even smaller chains like Stater Brothers will compete with prepared foods. Better yet google for grocer-delis around wherever you are staying, and find some treasures that are probably much better than any supermarket, including Whole Foods.

What matters is the specific Von's/Pavilions (Safeway), Whole Foods or Bristol Farms, etc. Some are simply better than others. My favorites are the Pavilions in West Hollywood which has a brick pizza oven, and the best pizza, along with excellent Sushi and hot foods.

There is a Ralph's supermarket at G&1st on one corner across from HOrton Plaza. go to mapquest.com and put in 101G Street for an address and it will map it for yu. then put in fined local hotels and it will map your hotel.
