    8 years ago. One hour is enough time for your connection, assuming your Are Lingus flights are on one ticket. Aer Lingus operates out of T2, so you won't have a change of terminal. The departing gate may be in T1, but that makes no difference as all gates are accessible airside from both terminals. Here's a handy guide.

I have been to Dublin many times but my family has never been to Ireland. The bulk of our trip will be spent hiking on the west coast.

    No! 4 hours is way too short to go to Dublin city centre. If your flight is onwards to the USA, you need 3 hours to clear USA customs and security. If you are coming from the USA onwards to Europe, you could just get a taxi to Malahide, a lovely Dublin town 15 minute drive from the airport and walk around for an hour but I wouldn't go any further than that.

Once out of arrivals, turn immediately left and follow the signs for terminal 1, this will bring you through a corridor connecting the two buildings.
