The problem in dropping it off thr night before is many hotel don’t operate shuttles for flights pre 7am. Many national car rental companies allo early am drop car off and put keys in a box.

If the prices are the same and the hours of the local locations works, then you can certainly rent from a local station closer to your hotel.
