Re: ITA Old Matrix = my favorite way to research flights. Yes, the old ITA Software Matrix has been my go-to for travel planning. Google's Airfare Search just doesn't offer the flexibility to thoroughly research your options. Everything seems to get dumbed down when corporations take control of good ideas.
Even with the matrix, I have uncovered situations where the on-line fare is not close. I will often call as a last line of defense, just to confirm full booking codes are aligned. I also use expertflyer to do this. I have also used the feedback function for matrix, to share information back to google.
I used to use ITA matrix, but found it to be impossibly slow after it got bought by Google flights. So since then I've been using Google flights for price comparisons. However, I can't find a way to eliminate Basic Economy fares from the search.

Google Flights uses the ITA Matrix engine (Google owns ITA) and to my knowledge only displays available live fares. And it's a much more user friendly interface. The only thing with GF is to make sure you book directly with the airline and don't click through to a shonky third party.
