However as you will always get a better rate of exchange in South Africa however you draw your rands, be it through an ATM or with travellers cheques, I can see no good reason to take rands into SA. Maybe a couple of hundred just for any very immediate needs otherwise draw money as you need it in SA.

    For the very few C$ it might save at this very advantageous exchange, I wouldn’t bother. It could get worse or better at the time you visit. Unfortunately for S Africans, the Rand will likely be pretty weak for a long time. Some people are more comfortable landing with local exchange in their pocket.
