The shore line is beautiful, forest smells are great, plenty of shaded are to set up and camp. The water is one of the cleanest you may find in South Texas. There is still some silt at the bottom, but at least when we were there water was clear (20+ ft easy).
The Sam Houston forest is so beautiful, with it's tall trees giving amble shade on a hot Texas day. The hiking trail we took was a very easy stroll down to Lake Conroe. It gave us a wonderful look at vegetation and some bird wildlife. Best to get online and get trail maps 1st, when we were there all maps were gone.

Great campground right on Lake Conroe. Spots are well spaced and the facility is in great shape. Camp hosts are very friendly and helpful. They have several reservable spots but most are walk-ups which tend to fill up quickly on the weekends. Bathrooms are older, but clean. Great trails for hiking and lots of firewood in surrounding area.
