It is very easy to drive back to baggage claim and pick up the other person with the bags. There is a sidewalk to the left of the parking lot.

Enthusiastic seconding of Discount Hawaii Car Rental; good prices and outstanding dispute resolution assistance. Have used Alamo on Oahu, Maui and Big Island with FAR from satisfactory results. Haven't tried them on Kauai, but there was a thread I bookmarked with a lot of info: will bump/look for 'Alamo on Kauai. Is it like Maui?' by in2food.

I'm only speaking to my personal experience and having rented a car on Kauai from Avis, Budget, Hertz and Alamo for the past 20+ years. And looking at the rental prices for a SUV vs. a mini-van, the mini-vans are listed for more $$.

We rented from Hertz through Autoslash last month and it was a breeze (and saved us almost 50% over the next cheapest option). We picked up our checked bags, got the shuttle, walked right up to the counter and were in our car in minutes.
