The potential issue with using Debit is that any pre-authorisation ("hold") placed on your card is held against your money, rendering it inaccesible for any other purpose until it's cleared/settled. That doesn't mean that they won't take them, but you could get someone that is a stickler for policy. Report inappropriate content.
A credit card is NOT a necessity when travelling to the US, I have been visiting for over 35 years and not just to "tourist" areas and have never taken a credit card. For car hire a debit card is fine as long as it is Visa or Mastercard, as Mark E said.
