I googled the topic and found the relevant page from Ez pass, which says do not enter your rental plate but use your transponder on the rental vehicle and it should charge my Ez pass account.

True, the EZ Pass isn't usually a good purchase for a one ride tourist, but they don't charge you $25/month, that's either the deposit or it's the refill amount, and they won't take more money from you until you use the pass enough to drop below (usually) $10.
In my experience, you won't get the state discount if you use one of the car rental company's EZ passes either.. The advantage to registering the rental car to your EZ pass (as long as you definitely remember to de-register it) is that if for some reason the EZ pass doesn't register then the bill should go to the EZ pass registrant of that license plate (that is, you) at the time of the rental.
Rent a car with an E-Z pass tag. If you don’t have an E-Z Pass tag, everytime you pass the reader, they will take a picture of your rental car and bill your rental car directly (tolls by mail). It is more expensive, you pay the non-discount the toll fee + processing fee. With E-Z Pass, you get a discounted rate.

Yes, in Massachusetts all tolls are cashless, which is the reason to avoid the Tobin Bridge, Williams, Sumner, and Callahan Tunnels in a rental car unless you have an EZ-pass. Having the transponder would be a less stressful way to travel, though.
