A first night charge to cancel is standard for online bookers. You can get very good deals for hotels from the likes of Travelocity but you still need to work out for yourself if it's a decent hotel or a slum.

We were quoted a total price with a $245.94 tax/service charge included. We then added ground transportation and trip insurance and charged the trip.

    I booked a hotel on a trip in Michigan several years ago, using a third party agent like Travelocity. When I had issues with the room and reported it to the hotel desk, they advised me that I should report any issues to the booking agent and that they, the hotel, were not responsible for my satisfaction with the accommodations; only the rate.
