    Sandals are fine and you will also find people in flip flops including many of the monks who float around. I would avoid the beach type flips flops which are not comfortable for walking great distances nor are they elegant but at the end of the day it is what you feel happy with. No need to cover ankles only arms and knees. Enjoy your trip.
