    1 year ago. Google maps cannot be downloaded outside of Japan. The reason for not being able to download offline maps of Japan on Google Maps is because Zenrin Co. (a Japanese mapping company) own the rights to the entire Japan cartographic area, and unlike most other countries, won't give it up to Google Maps for offline use.

    Google Maps is great for route planning. Ok long trips I tend to request the routing again periodically so that it’s updated with any traffic delays (especially during peak times like the beginning and end of weekends). Just be aware that in some more rural areas up in the mountains it may think that a small side road is a short cut.
