While credit cards give a good exchange rate (an interbank rate, one of the cheapest ways to "exchange" currency, even with the 2.5% or 3% fee they build into the rate they use), some credit cards will also charge you a fee on every transaction you do out-of-country.

Most cabs should take a cc... but you should get Canadian cash for small purchases. It is unlikely the ferry between Halifax & Dartmouth would take USD.
