4. Re: Cheapest supermarket chains. 11 years ago. IMHO, VONS (a Safeway company) and Ralphs are the most expensive in SoCal for Main Stream. Albertsons can be a bit less. Gelson's and Whole Foods are the most expensive, IMHO. If you want a Healthy Grocery Store, check out Sprouts Farmers Market in Southern California.
So Ralphs (a Kroger company), VONS (a Safeway Company), Albertsons (A SuperValu company) and Stater Bros. (a local Southern California chain) are the main Supermarkets with lots of variety and choice. Sprouts Farmers Market is the main "healthy" Grocery Store in San Diego, similar to Whole Foods.
Yes there are some shops/stores nearby. There is a large supermarket 10 min walk up the road, however, if you are buying lots, best get a taxi/cab back. There is also a Walmart but it is further away. The on site store is fine if you don't need a lot. Remember there is also the on site Starbucks which my husband frequented every day.
