I rented a car from an offsite location on my first trip to LA, since then I've just rented at the airport. Costs are a bit more but your savings from an offsite can't be much if any when you figure in transportation costs to and from the airport.

I've been renting cars at airports for 30 years, mainly in Los Angeles, and I stick to the major companies: hertz, avis, enterprise (the largest), dollar, thrifty, budget, alamo, national. What I do is use something like travelocity to compare rates among the companies and just reserve with whomever is cheapest.
