Re: Renewing Passport (number) after booking a flight. I'm a bit confused by your post. But yes, you can go online and change your passport number after you book a ticket. This is easier if you have an account created with the airline you're traveling (and you will earn miles). You can also call the airline.
2. Re: Global Entry - Applying Number to Booked Flights. 8 years ago. If you have existing reservations, you have to go into each of those one by one and add your known traveler number. There should be a spot in the passenger details of each reservation to add it. It is not going to pick it up automatically.

Calling the airline to confirm the reservation is 100% is not a bad thing. You cannot choose a seat and no one knows why. That isn't the end of the world. Stop calling the airline. Continue to check online. Best guess the air marshal is tentative and a number of first class seats are blocked. Leave well enough alone.

No blame or criticism at all on you here, but what you should have done is obtain that PNR from Air Canada so you could have logged into your reservation on the United website and select your seats. I’ve flowm AC code shares before (operated by Lufthansa) and my call to AC involved a 30 minute wait, just to get that other airline’s PNR.
No airline I've ever booked an international flight with has required passport information to accept the booking.. Certainly you have to fill in the APIS section of your booking (Advance Passenger Information Service) at some stage before you try to check in, and that includes your passport number, but it's not a prerequisite to buying the ticket.
