As an American, I do all my car rentals through the consolidator AutoEurope and call them directly on their toll-free number in Portland, Maine. I go over all my car rental needs such as rear covered area size and having a transponder for the many electronic toll only roads. In most cases, the actual provider has been Europcar.
Things I always ask about rental car companies: Drop off fees in a different city, how much hold they will put on my credit card, covered luggage space and locations/hours. Re: car rental. 1 year ago. Save. We rented a Europcar from AutoEurope (helpful consolidator company in USA) in 2019 and were very satisfied. We like using AutoEurope to book as their staff are very helpful, compare major companies prices, help you pick the best carand add-ons for your needs. They offer reasonable insurance too.
Nice car, all worked well though it took them two months to work out our bill because of adding on the tolls from the transponder. Internationally we have always done ok with Avis, we did have an issue with Europcar in Spain so have avoided them.
Uber is cheap in Portugal, so you can Uber from the airport to a rental company in the city. My friend, who is from Lisbon, suggested Europcar. I used their Lisbon Downtown City Center location (142/150 Rodrigues Sampaio, which is not open 24 hours despite the sign on the garage door) and had a good experience.
