I always use ATT when I travel internationally, it costs $10 a day for an international plan, it automatically turns on and off when you leave the country and when you return. Unlimited talk and data so if the wifi isn't good I use my phone as a hot spot and teether my laptop to the phone.

It works fine most of the time, my husband has to use his cell phone, as it's his business phone. In case you're interested, there are bars that have toll free calls home if you order food or drink.

If you don’t want to Be charged and don’t need to use your phone just turn cellular data off and have it on airplane mode. But you can still use watsup if there is a free WiFi.
Re: AT&T Wireless Service. 15 years ago. Yes, AT&T works well in San Lucas - not sure about San Jose. Its worth it to call AT&T and get on their "Mexico plan" ($3.99 or $4.99 - cant remember exactly). It cuts your calling costs from .99 a minute to .59 a minute and no daily roaming fee.
