I have used Charlie Car Rental in the past. I was very satisfied with the pricing and received great service without issues. I have always avoided those discount type rental companies, like Payless. Unfortunately, the rental price at Charlie has almost tripled from this March to March 2021. Most likely due to the response to the Covid virus.
You don't need to deal strictly with one of the big rental companies to get a reasonable rate and good customer service. Many of the "discount" agencies are subsidiaries of the Big rental companies. Personally, I have found Dollar to give great value, allows me to skip the counter and they don't try to upsell me on insurance.

So without the 300 our rental became $605. And we were stuck with it or no car. Not the fault of the car rental but we go about 6 kilometers down the road and get stopped for a roadside check by the National Police. The moral of the story is if you plan on renting a car in Costa Rica, plan on paying more than you see it offered for.
