I'd buy the JR pass and use it for the ride in from Narita to Tokyo and back as the fare is about $30 US. Also you can use it for the JR lines in Tokyo. You can spend $10/day on train tickets in Tokyo so if you ride mostly on the JR lines it saves you there too. The trip from Tokyo to Osaka pretty much pays for the pass. I haven't stayed long ...
