I don't understand how the state of CA ripped you off. Avis (and other rental car companies) have latched onto this toll transponder revenue stream and charge visitors silly amounts of money for the convenience of having a transponder. $2.95/day seems to be a standard fee - not just in CA, but in other states as well - this was the fee last time I rented from Hertz at Washington Dulles.

The toll google refers to is the admission fee for Yosemite National Park which is $20. All of the tolls in Northern California are bridge tolls and should not affect you. I contacted with Hertz. And they said they pass my information to the toll roads violation department so the department can send the citation direct to me, That $30 is charged for this action. And Hertz don't the amount I need to pay for this toll violation. So now I need to wait for the toll roads violation department to send me citation/notice.

    1) Most toll roads/bridges allow cash payments. To avoid fines, simply carry cash. 2) *Some* toll roads are automated/cashless. These are typically "express" lanes but also include traditional toll roads like the Mass Pike and bridges (like the GWB). To avoid convenience fees, set up alternative payment options.

Thrifty / Hertz SCAM with PlatePass. 5 years ago. An extremely serious scam is going on in California with Thrifty, using toll charges and PlatePass. When collecting our car from Los Angeles LAX airport, we were informed about PlatePass at the desk. Paying $11.99 per day (for a total of $131.97) would've cover us for any toll road, and avoid ...

You can pay a fee to Hertz for tolls but the problem with them is they charge you a flat fee every day regardless of whether you go through a toll or not. Means you’ll pay for something you won’t use often if at all. Other rental companies have better tolling systems that only charge you on days you actually go through a toll point.

In the Bay Area, none of the toll bridges accept direct payment at a toll plaza anymore - either use the rental company transponder (almost never a good deal; they will charge you for the tolls plus a substantial extra fee for the privilege - often billed to your credit card as a separate charge, sometimes months later ), or go to the online site to pay, either before or within 48 hours after ...

Yesterday we received a letter via post at home, a Notice of Credit Card Charge from Thrifty Processing Service, for a 91 Express Lanes Violation Processing fee of $30.00. It also mentions that I am responsible for resolving the toll charges with the toll issuer, as my name is now associated with the toll charges.
