The rental counter and pickup/return is in the airport car rental center via the airport AirTrain. The vehicle had 62,000 miles on it which was a little concerning but it turned out the vehicle was just fine. Perhaps that is why Fox was the cheapest to rent from. During the rental process they offer you the typical additional car insurance.

I'm sorry, but a 2 1/2 to 3 hour wait anywhere, with any car company, is just beyond belief. Are you sure you were talking about Hertz and not Fox (they both have odd letters) - Hertz is very seldom used with "discounts" in the same breath, they (and Avis) are the full-priced, full service options that business travelers and rich people (like WD, lol) use (just joking WD).
Thanks for all the info. we are going to have a car from a monday to the next tuesday. Start in SF drive down the coast to Southern CA and end up in LA. I will try all your suggestions. Have car rentals gone up a lot in the past 2 years?
We also rented a car two months ago for a California trip and the car was a piece of crap. Had 58,000 miles on it! When we were 400 miles farther, I called Hertz to see if I could make a trade and was told Hertz had gone thru a bankruptcy and had no newer cars. I also was not pleased with Hertz to pick up a car that had 1/8 tank of gas in it ...
