We are planning to rent a car, but it seems that all of the major car rental rental companies are charging an additional rate (minimum $250) because the pick-up and drop-off locations are different. For the 2 weeks we'll be there, the rental rate seem to average between $1000 to $1200. This is quite a steep price tag from my perspective.

Have tried different airports (leaving from San Jose rather than San Francisco, for example), in-city vs airport, reversing direction from LA up to SF instead of southbound, etc. Currently, the cheapest going rate is a penalty that is about $800.

I think currently they will run out of small cars first so they will make you a good deal to upgrade, maybe only a dollar or 2 a day, just be careful with gas.
