Google Maps will tell you to go to Memphis, then I-22 to Tupelo and then Hwy 45 all the way down to Mobile. The problem is Hwy 45 goes from decent 4 lane down to cruddy two lane once you cross the border in to Alabama.

368 helpful votes. 1. Re: Driving through Kansas. 12 years ago. Save. If you are staying on I-70, I recomend visiting the Grassroots Arts Center in Lucas. It is a hoot. Also the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays and the shopping and restaurants on Mass Street in Lawrence.

Salina has many more options for food and lodging. Both cities have a lot to do, though Old Abilene town is far down my picks.
