magicJack. MagicJack, often stylized as magicJack, is an Internet-based telephone service (VoIP) provider in the United States and Canada. It offers nationwide VoIP and cellphone services. MagicJack VoIP service is a computer peripheral that, in combination with telephony service from the related YMAX Corporation, provides VoIP services.
Other options include SKYPE, international calling cards or the phone service from ICE. If you have an unlocked cell phone, you can purchase an inexpensive SIM card from ICE to use while you are in Costa Rica - 2500 colones for 80 minutes - and international rates are cheap.
NOTE USA based phone numbers are available free of charge. You can get longer term phone service deals, e.g. an extra 5 years for $69.95, but I just wanted to experiment at a low cost for now. I personally think it is a great deal. The phone conversation quality is pretty good, not unlike if not better than Skype.

Answer 1 of 5: Has the Bahamian government blocked VOIP calling apps from smartphones or are they still available. Also does anyone know if they plan to block them anytime soon?
Calling other countries in Latin America using Skype can be a little more expensive and in some cases calling a mobile phone in a country is more expensive than calling a land line (Argentina is one example). Also, Skype allows you to dial directly to 800 or other toll free numbers in the U.S. for free.
