I’ve found Google Maps to be very reliable in France.The “offline” feature works really well if you don’t have data coverage. I don’t drive in France myself but I spend a lot of time in the passenger seat beside a professional who does, and his go-to app is Google plus a paper Michelin atlas.

From Richmond, I would be more inclined to take I-85 and I-40. From Durham, NC you are looking at 4 hours to the Tennessee/North Carolina line. Continue I-40 in Tennessee and take the Foothills Parkway exit. Follow the Foothills Parkway until it ends on Highway 321, turn left, and follow 321 into Gatlinburg.
