Avis accepts most major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental. Accepted credit card list: Avis Charge Card, American Express, AT&T Capital, Diner's Club Int'l, Discover, China UnionPay, GE Capital, JCB, MasterCard, PHH, Sears and Visa. Some locations may not accept each of the referenced cards.
The customer must meet the minimum criteria to rent using a debit card. In addition, the acceptance of such debit cards is contingent upon the debit cards having available funds to cover the estimated charges plus an authorization of up to US$ 200.00 given certain conditions that will be outlined at time of rental.

Great post, but no one answered the original question. Does anyone have personal experience with a rental company that accepts debit cards. This is only one example, another example is someone who has bad credit or a bankruptcy and can't get a credit card but still needs to travel and rent a car and has a debit card and plenty of money on it.
1. Re: Car Rental with debit card. Yes. Most car rental companies require a credit card. But may accept a debit card, but only if you are above 25 years old (eg Avis) Try Fox. They are ok with debit cards. and ok with underage drivers (surcharge). But call to confirm.
Debit cards are accepted at our airport locations at the time of rental with a round trip travel ticket (i.e. cruise ship, train, airline) e-ticket, or travel itinerary that shows the renter's name and discloses a return date and port of entry."
