Mercat a la Planxa is a Spanish style restaurant situated in the South Loop / Downtown area of Chicago. The restaurant is actually located within the Blackstone hotel, which is opposite Grant Park, on the junction of South Michigan Avenue and East Balbo Avenue. It is a short walk from Harrison metro station.
It was once the Chicago Public Library. It is quite large inside. You could easily spend an hour or more there. It is not far from Millennium Park. It also has very clean restrooms! There was an art display while we were there on the 4th floor. Best of all it is free. It is a neat, free attraction downtown.
So excited to try this legendary tapas bar and it fell as flat as a Spanish pancake. The place is quite large and is crowded even in the late afternoon. The menu is hit or miss: the Brussels sprout salad was crisp and refreshing; the Spanish omelette was flavorful and not dry; but the paella came out wrong and the sweet potato soup tasted off.
