Best day on the island was riding around Maui on the 300cc (big) scooter. We drove north shore to Paia (lunch), up to a mountain village of Makawao and back to Lahaina. Stopped at blow hole and to see the Turtles. Wanted to rent a big bike (Harley or BMW), but all you need is the 300cc. Never felt it wasn't enough bike and quiet.

5. Re: Scooter rental. Frank, it's just not a good idea anywhere on Maui. The shoulder of the highway is where you ride---along with all those distracted tourists and locals driving vehicles. The shoulder can have rocks, trash, dead animals, etc--making you swerve. And of course, the lanes of traffic can also have those things---making *them ...
Answer 1 of 15: We are in Maui at the end of September and want to rent a scooter for 4-5 hours and just putt around ... a different experience! We are unsure which is the best area to rent in -- West Maui or South Maui?

So called 'bike lanes' are mostly the beakdown lane - and away from busy highways you are sharing the street with cars.
