Diners Club has been widely accepted by merchants in every country I’ve visited in Italy ( Milan, Florence, Venice, Amalfi Coast except Rome! As far as Euros, I recommend 1) getting euros at your local bank or 2) plan to use a credit card to withdraw cash in euros. The exchange desks and hotels have horrible rates.
I can't seem to get an answer to this question. Discover card said that anyone displaying the Diners Club Logo, which is also on the Discover credit card, will accept your discover card for payment. So I would assume anyone who takes diners club, will accept discover. I called hotels, including 5 star hotels, and asked if they accept discover card.
