6. Re: Best Car Rental at San (San Diego Airport. 9 years ago. Hertz and Avis are a step above any of the others and are consistently rated that way. As mentioned above join Hertz Gold and Avis preferred to skip having to speak with anyone other than the guard at the exit.
In San Diego, we have used Alamo, Budget, and Thrifty and we have had no problems with any of them. Next month in May for a 5 day rental via Costco site, we can get a intermediate SUV at Alamo for $135 all taxes included.

Alamo, Hertz, Avis, National, Enterprise -- we mostly do one-day rentals from San Diego and return the car in Orange County or L.A. when we are getting on a cruise ship or flying out of LAX. We've used all of the major brands at various times and never had a problem.

I would suggest using a company that allows you to bypass the counter and just go pick up your car: Avis, Hertz, Enterprise, National, etc.
