Sure, you can easily get the car at BWI and drive to Gaithersburg; it does require two shuttle buses, and to avoid the toll road, take 195 to 95 South to 495, then north on 270.

The shuttle buses run regularly between the Amtrak station and the airport terminals, where you can easily catch another shuttle to the car rental facility.
Yes, there's a big easy parking deck directly adjacent to the Amtrak/MARC station, it was $9 a day, overnights fine, easy in easy out. I've used it to ride Amtrak instead of parking near downtown Baltimore Penn Station. Being that BWI is right off 95/195/295 its even easier than getting to Penn.

Just go to Google.com, select "maps" and enter the address of the BWI car rental facility: 7416 New Ridge Road. Hanover, MD. When that comes up just enter "gas station" in the "search nearby" box and you'll see all the stations in the area.
The gas station was a Shell, and the address is 1356 Dorsey Rd, Hanover, MD. They had reasonable prices, and as I've already mentioned, are very convenient to the rental car facility. I was coming to BWI from the south, near the DC area. If you were coming to BWI from the north, near Baltimore, this gas station may not be as convenient because ...
